Ready, Set, Dissect.

This is a little game that we played over at The Decorating Forum, but we have decided to make this a weekly Friday feature here from now on.

The Aim:

I pick a room that I think has good and bad elements. It's not a room that everyone will love. But it is a room that I am sure has some great points about it, and some horrid points about it. Not everyone has to like it, and that's the idea of the game.

I want you to tell me what you think - love it or hate it - be honest. Tell me what you think of the furniture, the colours, or what could be added.

It's fun because I encourage you to come back over and read the comments. Some are hilarious! It's interesting to me because what I see is not what everyone sees. That's the beauty of interior design.

So... Ready, Set, Dissect...  Hit me. I would love to see you spew about this room, want to live in it, or graffiti the walls. What do you think? I will pop into the comments section too and add my thoughts here and there.

.
I will be posting again over the weekend as I have a surprise for you!
So please come back.

I am trying to work out the theme here?.. 70's retro mirror wall and hanging light, with french provincial side table, with 90's sofa, with 80's wallpaper plus industrial revolution coffee table with rock and duck. Hmmm, now the cowhide would be nice.. but somewhere else... another room perhaps. A-M xx

that room just gave me a headache and I needed to go lie down for a nanna nap! Kinda liked the colors though. Will comment further when my headache subsides lol

All together it is just visual overload from my perspective.

I like the wallpaper and wall of curtains, they look great with the side table.
Did this room used to be the bathroom? Great wall of mirrors and mirror cabinet but not for a living area.
I luurrve the low hanging pendant lights... and the hydrangea.
The shape of the sofa suits the room but the back cushions have been very poorly made and the colour of the scatter cushions is very strong and becomes a focus.
Don't get me started on the rug and coffee table.

Where do you find these photos Katrina lol. OMG it is way too much. I like a lot of the elements of the room separately but not together. I mean I like eclectic but this makes me cringe. The rug, the sofa and the wallpaper can stay. The 2 tables have to go. I don't like the cabinets above the sofa- it feels like you are going to bump your head. I wonder if this is someone's actual living room- eek!

Oh my lord it is like the stylist was on some sort of hallucinogen. ...why would you put the cow hide in that room? Why the french style side table with that couch? Oh my giddy aunt...I need a Bex and a wee lie down....but please not in that room!

Katrina said...

Hahah! Oh you are all too harsh! Look at how comfy that lounge looks.. I could slop around on that for the day. And what about the mirrors - you could see how you looked all day long. I love the low lampshade and I think the wallpaper is very cool (although it suits this room, not for my house!). I love the cowhide - very retro. But it strange with lavender. Is lavender coming in an 'it' colour??

The little silver duck lost if for me.

Oh groan...great fun idea but this really does my head in. Like I know what I'm talking about (ha no,don't) but since you asked so nicely. Love the lounge, hate the tables, couldn't bear to see myself in that many mirrors all at once...a whole new dimension to 'does my bum look big in this', and that ceiling fan just really has to go. Nice hydrangeas but pity about the vase and why is it sitting in that dish...does it leak do you think? Ah, that feels better...now back to work!

That's it the mirrors have to go:)

I'm not liking it
I like most of the furniture and accessories individually, but they don't work together.

I don't want to go back and look at it again, it makes me feel agitated

Katrina, I forgot to add this wonderful new blog of yours to my favs....I'm off to do it now. I had to tell you that as I thought you'd be staying awake all night worrying if I didn't mention it - ha ha!

Katrina, it's a beauty, I hate nearly all of it. What were they thinking. Hate the pink couch, hate the coffee table and the wall paper (sorry to the creators) I even hate the bird mirror and I usually like birds.I would keep the white side table and the little rabbit. That's about it. I really like this game though!!!

Im not really sure what to say except Im confused?! Im no decorating expert and really each to their own but I found it hard to look at the pic, click and make a comment cause I just couldn't think straight LOL so I had to open two pages to look at the pic and write.
I do like the flowers, the mirror scares me too and I could only imagine the kids with it hehe. The lounge looks comfy to lay on but not to sit on.
Fun game

Oh Katrina, I think I nearly threw up looking at that one. It is oh so busy, too much of everything.
So many great features but not all together. Keep the sofa and flowers, strip off the rest, especially the mirror, give me a plain white wall.
Oh now it's given me a headache.

What I really want to know is where is that weird pink glow coming from? Is there a hidden LCD strobe-type light attached under the mirrored cupboards? And aren't they bathroom cabinets along the walls? But I do like the couch and coffee table base, not into dead animals on my floor (however trendy they may be!) like the wallpaper too. I think they've tried to go for the whole eclectic theme, but it's a fine line between awesome and awful. Love love love this post and love the new blog - this is so fun!

This is so totally not my style (I do love that coffee table though - perhaps with a timber top instead) though I can appreciate some elements in the room. It's a bit kinda kitch meets contemporary which comes off a little creepy looking! Lavender's not my colour though that sofa has great lines.
Fun game!

Bad news for those of you who don't like lilac- it is the IN colour. Personally I think it should only be used in little girls and grandmothers bedrooms but the paint companies say otherwise. Don't panic too much though in 6 months it will be another colour that is IN.
I do love the pendant lamp. I don't like any of the accessories or the ceiling fan. But I have seen worse but usually because they haven't tried.
I love this game:)

Wow I absolutely adore this space, I would love to live it it. I most love the aspects of the lighting, majority is natural light with the inclusion of an entire wall dedicated to windows and their natural light. Also there is a wall-mounted fireplace for a soft glowing artificial light and a ceiling fan for a stronger source of artificial light. I love the differing textures too. The flowers are soft and fluffy, the vase is strong and displays clean lines, the crisp clean mirrors, flowing curtains, and the many straight lines all work particularly well together. The combination of ages between the modern lounge suite, fan, and vase, blend well to the eye with the aged side table, coffee table, and style of wallpaper. I like the use of mirrors too, to create the illusion of space. The use of repitition is great in this space, with the many uses of colours silver and black, and the square and round shapes.
Overall I adore this space, although the cow hide doesn't work as it instantly stands out, therefore not allowing the eye to bounce around the room. Perhaps a different black/white/silver rug with more of a modern design would work well in its' place.

Aimee - I loved your comment! I didn't think the room was as bad as everyone thought either haha :)

And that's the beauty of the game because now you start to look at it differently and see it through Aimee's eyes:)

It has some nice elements but overall the room makes me feel uncomfortable. I like a room where you feel relaxed and you just want to sink into the nearest sofa... just gone back for another look - I think it is the mirrors that make me feel on edge. I couldn't cope with it but then again, some people would love that.
I'm hopeing right now that this is not your own lounge room - LOL

Katrina said...

No Kerryanne, it's not any of our rooms. Thanks for the comment! :)

It's interesting....to me there are too many things happening...I like simple and this is far from it....if the pendant and fan and mirrors stay to me the coffee table needs to go its just doesn't sit right and the same for the reverse.

I love the wallpaper, but think there is too much happening on the couch in terms of colour and texture

Jackie Mitchell said...

Oh wow it is busy & awful, whats with the wall paper & Im not into the colours at all maybe they wouldnt be so bad if there was alot of white in there. I think if I entered this room I would crumble

Kym said...

First impression is YUK..but I think it is the colour...not my colour at all. Love the couch looks sooo comfy. The mirror increases the space and I love the coffee table and the side table. Modern wallpaper is all the rage at the moment but I am afraid I too would have a constant headache living in this. Some good design elements but not for me.. this is fun:) Thanks Kym

HECK....ditch that wallpaper- those folks need to go visit Silk Road...sorry but that wallpaper needs to go.The table and the cowskin also need to go (cowskin more than table)...the couch stays and I like the cushion tones and the brown tones. I love the vase (but not the shellbowl thing its resting in- hopefully that is not attached to the vase) and love the flowers. I love the white side table too that can stay. The silver baubles and the silver duck can be thrown out the nearest window. Altogether I can sort of see what they are trying for but I think there's too much of it and all together it does not flow cohesively as a whole.

You know what it looks like to me? Like a Home decorating editor has grabbed all the latest styles that are "in' at the moment and thrown them all together for one shoot. This is obviously a magazine who couldnt afford to do three seperate shoots ~ shabby chic, retro and industrial so thought "eh, lets chuck em all into a soup and see what comes out".
A bad tasting soup in my opinion ;0)

ps. extra entry in giveaway as I would love that mag!!! he he

Hmmm, I'll take the white side table, vase and hydrangea's. The rest can go. The duck reminds me of a bathroom and is the couch pink or is it just my monitor?

I actually don't mind this room! Love the coffee table on wheels, and the colour of the lounge is wonderful. The wallpaper I could live with, but its not something I would actually pick out myself. The only thing I don't really like is the cow mat. Fun game! Its interesting reading through all the comments.

Sew Useful Designs said...

LOL.. these comments are funny!
First impression was that I thought that someone had spilled hot chocolate all over the cream carpet - until I realised it was a cow-hide rug! Comfy looking sofa, but I don't think I could relax with those long wispy drapes. And the mirrors? I would freak myself out constantly thinking there was someone else in the room with me! I love the colour scheme, and the flowers, but I wouldn't want to live in that room.

Tracy (ssmama) said...

Oh. My first thought was - I have lived in this room, back in the 80's when I shared a townhouse with my funky aunt who was utterly enamoured of the whole pink and black enamel thing. Do you think this person might have visited?

The colours are shocking - the wallpaper makes me gag, and there's such a mish-mash of themes going on here that the whole thing falls down for me, though there are elements I don't mind on their own (Basically, reverse what Elizabeth says and you've got me...lol ;) ).

And hey...who has time to keep mirrors like that streak- and fingerprint-free? Pass.

Elements of the room work and are nice items in themselves but all together it makes me 'groan" It is just not Happenin for me

Howdy!! i dont mind the wallpaper...
& the pink couch blends in with it..

I HATE glass tables & cowskin type mats...

love the colour of the hydrangeas...
Not fussed on the white "shabby" table mixed in with the glass table..

SO it does have some nice elements BUT I dont think i could relax in there for too long!!
